Silat Appreciation Workshop
One of the objectives of the Malay Heritage Centre is to create awareness and appreciation among young Singaporeans of their heritage, cultural, as well as historical roots.
To champion this, the Centre offers exciting 2-hr educational programmes specially designed for students.
Objectives
At the end of the visit, students should be able to:
1. Appreciate the role that MHC plays in preserving the Malay cultural heritage in Singapore ;
2. Explain the contributions made by the Malays to the development of Singapore ;
3. Explain the importance of preserving the Malay heritage in a multi-racial society like Singapore

An introduction to the historic Istana Kampong Gelam and Gedung Kuning
A 45-min cultural performance which starts with a demonstration of the traditional martial arts called “ Silat ”. Packed with traditional Malay dance, the cultural show will also include information on Malay customs and gestures. The show also promises interactive segments where the audiences chanced at playing traditional musical instruments and learn Malay dance moves!

An introduction to the historic Istana Kampong Gelam and Gedung Kuning
50 minutes of excitement and fun where you'll be taught how to play two of the most popular instruments in traditional Malay music; Kompang and Angklung. Know the story behind the making of these instruments including its material and basic techniques. You'll surprise yourself with the wonderful music you can create by the end of the session!

Participants will be taught how to play either the Kompang or Angklung, which are two of the most popular instruments in traditional Malay music. Know the story behind the making of these instruments including its material and basic techniques
Games such as “Congkak”, “Sepak Takraw”, “Batu Seremban ” and “ Capteh ” used to be popular before the arrival of modern games. In this segment, facilitators will re-introduce the traditional games and techniques with demonstration

An introduction to the historic Istana Kampong Gelam and Gedung Kuning
A 1-hr or 2-hr demo and hands-on session where students chance to learn the origins of Batik painting, the different types of materials suitable for the art, its do's and don'ts, as well as the technique in using the “ canting ” to draw.
Each student will be given a handkerchief-sized pre-waxed Batik drawing to paint and complete, after which can be taken home as a souvenir

Many do not know that Kampong Glam is the first settlement designated by Sir Stamford Raffles during his administration of Singapore . In line with our national direction in promoting cross-cultural heritage appreciation, the Malay Heritage Centre presents the Heritage Trail @ Kampong Glam Program.
Walk the trail with us and rediscover the first settlement through sights, sounds and smells back into centuries before.
Each trail will start at the Malay Heritage Museum ; then venturing out to the allocated sites, before ending the day with some light refreshments.

This 1.5 hour interactive workshop serves as an introduction to the beauty and grace of Pencak Silat, the Malay Art of self-defence in performing Silat Pengantin.
During early Malay civilization, Silat Pengantin was performed for the Sultan; showcasing skills and competence of the Panglima; A Malay warrior. Silat Pengantin is still practiced today and is performed at Malay Weddings, where newlyweds are perceived to be the Sultanate for the day.
Discover the meaning behind each movement of Traditional Silat Pengantin and learn how to perform the Art whilst maintaining respect and etiquette.

Traditional Pencak Silat Appreciation Workshops:
For Pre-School/Kindergarten Students
The emphasis at this early stage in life is to let the students enjoy Pencak Silat via traditional and creative exercises that will strengthen the muscles and enhance flexibility of the joints.
For Primary School Students
At the ages of 6 – 12, participants will pair up, and together, they will appreciate the friendship, bonding and teamwork that will occur through Traditional Pencak Silat adventure training.
For Secondary School Students
Participants of this age group will learn to understand the importance of discipline and confidence. At this stage, they will undergo a series of exercises based on traditional aspects of Pencak Silat that will help boost their own self-image and confidence.
For Tertiary School Students
This workshop will further enhance the students' sense of maturity by inculcating the importance of strength of character and wisdom behind decision-making processes.
Workshops are conducted by respected Silat Guru; Paman Iskandar Muda.
